“MOODS & EMOTIONS” JULY 2021

This month there will be three parts to our “Readings and Reflections” exercises.

  • Rent and watch the Movie “Hable con Ella”.
It is available in several media for $5 or less. YouTube and Amazon Prime provide subtitles in different languages. If you can, we recommend watching it with a partner with whom you can talk about what you see there, and how you respond to it. The movie has a number of provocative characters and events in it, and you will find yourself reacting to what the movie invites.

  • Begin a journal in which you are going to keep track of notable moods and emotions you encounter during the month.
Here we are looking for moods and emotions that you notice and will have the opportunity to “interrogate” and also we ask that you stop during the month and ask yourself questions about moods and emotions which...

    • are confusing, or that you want to hide from or put away from yourself

    • are embarrassing, politically incorrect or that leave you feeling exposed or emotionally raw

    • you consider extremely positive in your life

    • you treat casually, without having to pay attention

    • you have bad dreams about or that you don’t want to admit you have.

  • The Assessment Exercise
You observed Chauncey demonstrating this exercise in class. Choose 3 important people in your life to practice this exercise with. Examples: A spouse or significant other, a child, a work colleague, or a good friend. Outside of class, notice when someone is sharing a negative assessment with you. Silently utilize the Assessment Exercise below and become aware of your mood, what you’d name it, your body sensations, your nervous system and notice what occurs when you follow the exercise.

Assessment Exercise

Remember, you are “B”.

A: I have an assessment for you.
B: I would like to hear it.
A: (makes the assessment)
B: Thank you for that assessment. I can see why you might say that. It is only an assessment, and it could be grounded or ungrounded. I have given you the authority (permission) to make assessments of me (or not). And, I am open to further conversations with you about that. (or not) Thank you!
A: You are Welcome
