Join the SALON

During 2021 and 2022, along with Laurie Dent, Susie Cantor, Peter Yaholkovsky (and other collaborators), I led a “Masterclass.” We explored what it takes to build new worlds. After 18 months, we stopped, took stock and now we are making new offers. Before I go further, here is a little background:

The Heart of the Matter

For months we have been asking, “What should you and I be doing together for the sake of the health and well-being of ourselves and those with whom we share the planet?” We think this is a bloody good question.

It looks to us that the world has entered a tumultuous new era. Over time the new era (it does not yet have a stable name) will replace the industrial era that we have all grown up in. The background narratives of the old world are collapsing, some quickly and obviously, and others more slowly and subtly. As human beings who care about each other and our worlds, we confront massive polarizing changes that often divide us rather than bringing us together.

In this moment, we ask, What are the most critical skills for navigating in this new era? Our answer: Skills and sensibilities that support us in developing trusting relationships with each other. We need to get a lot better at having conversations and building relationships.

As the rate of change in the world accelerates and the world gets smaller, we will not have the time or leisure to wait for our old ways of getting to know each other as we build the relationships in which we construct our worlds.

In The Salon, we will talk about this. We are bringing wonderful guests to our meetings, learning and practicing together as we enrich our relationships. One of our ambitions, as we enter 2023, is to expand the community in which we are talking. Eliminating the “price of participation” is specifically designed to make these conversations available to more people.

So we invite you to help us with this ambition. Invite those friends with whom you share concerns AND those with who you do not always agree. Invite your adult children and young friends to join us as well. Let us see if we can extend the range of ages with whom we are talking. We particularly want to include Millennials (age 25-38) in addition to Boomers (age 55-73) and Gen Xers (age 39-54).

We are recording all sessions of The Salon. To listen to recordings of past meetings, follow the instructions below to register, and you will find those recordings in the community’s records.

The Salon convenes:

  • The first Wednesday of every month

  • 1:00pm – 2:30pm Pacific Time
75 min designed conversation, + 15 min optional informal conversation
This time slot allows for friends from all over the world to join us.

  • Our next Salon will be held on the first Wednesday of the next calendar month!

  • There is no fee for participation.
These monthly Salons are our gift to the community.
(We “make our living” from consulting relationships with organizations and individuals, some of whom may emerge from our gatherings.)

When you arrive at www.skool.com/altwork, you may notice many people who are unfamiliar to you. We are growing this community in collaboration with my long-time partner Saqib Rasool, who will continually bring new participants to our conversations.
