Transform your capacity to build your financial future.
Introducing UpLifting Finance!™
A new two-day workshop by world-class business designers Matthew Hancocks and Chauncey Bell.
When your profits are a consequence of financial trickery rather than serving your customers, that’s financialization.
We promise you will be able to eliminate dependence upon financialization and “empty calories” profit. We’ll help you develop a reliable business profit machine of which you can be proud.
Workshops in USA, Canada, UK, Mexico and India start in November 2019.
Is anything about the following familiar?
Late in the financial year the business unit is in danger of missing its profit targets by 25%. The CFO discreetly tells the Group CEO that there might be a way that the profit targets could be met. During the budgeting process, he had created an accounting reserve to cover projected liabilities for a client. It turned out that the liabilities were less than projected at the start of the year, and they could release the reserve. The earnings could then be increased and the gap in the budget could be closed, contributing to the company’s overall profit. (Truth be told, an equivalent move had been done in each of the last two years.)
Each year many companies become a little more like banks, busily moving flows of money in and out of buckets. Do a little smoothing to round out weak profits in year one. Do a little more in the following year. Explore new ways to jigger accounts, personnel, acquisitions, and divestments to satisfy investors and analysts. By the fifth year, over a third of the profits come from financial engineering. Before you know it, your enterprise has become completely financialized. It is now a bank that happens to include some machinery producing products and services.
So how can we escape financialization?
At a glance, the solutions are easy. Take the high road of placing finance at the service of real-world value creation rather than the low road of simply doing what it takes to make more money. But swimming against the riptide of financialization looks daunting or impossible. Changing the commonsense values of your own community demands a rare kind of leadership and resilience.
With UpLifting Finance!™ Chauncey and Matthew have pioneered bringing healthier and more competitive financial practices to enterprises by focusing on two matters:
Preparing finance leaders to take the cultural and moral risks that are required for changing practices and common senses. They develop and coach those courageous leaders.
Reconnecting financial practices and conversations to grounded, authentic missions. They help clients’ teams to design those risks out of operations.
