2 DAY INTENSIVE WORKSHOP ON BRINGING FORTH A NEW FUTURE
Seattle, Washington November 13-14, 2019
Business Leaders, Managers, Consultants, Entrepreneurs:
IF YOU ARE AWAKE TO THE CHALLENGES BEFORE US, you recognize that we are confronted with nasty messes and few ready answers. With little time to think, we find ourselves in overwhelming circumstances, running in circles, often making no progress. More and more, we encounter cultural and ethical challenges at every turn. With pressure to follow the rules, not rock the boat, avoid offending people, etc., is it any wonder we find a lack of ability to address the challenges that depend on our authenticity and thoughtfulness?
IT IS BRUTALLY DIFFICULT TO MOVE AN ENTERPRISE IN A NEW DIRECTION
Even with inklings of new paths to take, traditional practices and systems for changing course and extracting value are no longer sufficient to identify areas for improvement, expansion, and growth. And yet the world is rife with possibilities for those who can see them. To engage people in these possibilities, it is imperative to draft a new story and then move with skill and confidence in this emergent world. Bringing others onto your path is challenging. When we interact with each other the vast majority of what is important is literally invisible—power, trust, concerns, learning, and listening just to name a few. Few are facile at navigating this territory.
A NEW WAY OF BEING AND WORKING TOGETHER IS CALLED FOR
Building new capacities to diagnose messes, design new practices and mobilize the people in our organizations calls on us to learn how to operate effectively in two worlds at the same time. Fernando Flores points at the heart of the mess:
‘Our rationalistic tradition puts its emphasis on facts and the truth of claims. There is a whole other world that is just as important, and no less rational: the world of emotional, social, and historical effects. It is in this other adjacent world that in conversations with each other, we bring forth realities, negotiate with each other, and make history happen. In that world, language is not only about facts but also poetical and political invention, and bringing action.’
… AND A NEW DIRECTION IS IMPERATIVE
For decades, credible reviews have shown that the great majority of efforts to make important changes in organizational practices fail miserably. Challenging the core assumptions that sit unobserved beneath our conventional wisdoms is not simple. The typical approaches we turn to, particularly including management, leadership, innovation, and change management, have become bankrupt as they are missing the capacity to see under the surface. We must seek out other approaches that allow us to see what has been invisible to us.
